My First Body Pump Experience

After reading numerous blogs raving about Body Pump, I’ve been kind of sad that my gym doesn’t have it. It doesn’t have classes at all, actually, since it’s pretty must just a bare bones gym. But after talking to Becca on twitter for the past couple of days, she invited me to be a guest at her gym and attend a Body Pump class with her last night!!! I was also super excited to meet her for the first time. She’s so cute and nice and I had such a good time chatting with her!

So we got to the gym and walked into the room where the classes are held, and I was pretty much clueless about what equipment I needed, so thank goodness Becca was with me! We needed a step, a mat, a body bar with weights, and hand weights. I wasn’t sure how much weight to put on for my first time, so I just went with the smallest amount to put on the bar and four pound hand weights.

The first song was mostly squats, which killed my legs!!! I probably could have increased the weight on the bar, but I didn’t want to hurt myself during the first class. I really liked the upper body workout, but I should have used more weight. I think I really need to improve my upper body strength!  The hour went by really fast and was a lot of fun. The instructor was really cool too. I would totally do it again! And Becca’s gym is much nicer than mine! 🙂 I wish mine had TVs on the treadmills!

We got back to Becca’s apartment after class and took some funny post-workout pictures. This one was the best, I stole it from her blog post this morning!

So, I think I may continue with weight training, since I think it will help me become a stronger runner. I bought a Jillian Micheals DVD (No More Trouble Zones) that I’ve been waiting to try until after the Boilermaker, so I think I’m going to start incorporating that into my workout regime ASAP!

Carbo-loading!

In 24 hours I will be in a car headed to Utica, New York to run in my first ever long distance race, the Boilermaker 15K!! I’m super excited, since the race is the biggest 15K, with 13,000 people running! 9.3 miles will also be the most I’ve ever ran at one time.

I wanted to get my carbs in tonight, so I made some Ronzoni SmartTaste pasta for dinner!

I topped my spaghetti with some roasted red pepper bruschetta, olive oil, oregano, and Parmesan cheese. I also had a slice of my new favorite bread…Country Kitchen Double Fiber Whole Wheat!

Tomorrow I’m going to make sure I eat very clean, maybe make some whole wheat pancakes for breakfast, maybe a sandwich for lunch and a light dinner, and drink lots of water…just to make sure my tummy is happy on Sunday. 🙂

After dinner tonight I decided to take a short bike ride, just to get in some more exercise, since I haven’t been working out much this week. I went for a six mile ride in 38 minutes and 30 seconds. It was such a warm and gorgeous night!!!

Froyo Solves Everything

Ah, finally Friday. Lets rewind.

Last night I went to Alive @ Five in downtown Albany to see a free Boyz II Men concert!

It was pretty fun, but sooo crowded! It definitely brought back some memories from the 90s! My friend Ken was SO excited to see Boyz II Men! We had fun singing along with “Water Runs Dry”, my favorite!

My sister also came too!

I had packed a dinner yesterday morning specifically for Alive @ Five, since I knew they would have zero healthy food choices there! I made a simple PBJ…perfect for on the go and I munched on that before Boyz II Men came on! I didn’t take any pictures of it though…since I’m pretty sure you all know what a PBJ looks like. 😉 I also brought a plum and a luna bar!

But anyway, my favorite part of the concert were the ROSES!

It was fun. Courtney also had a nice re-cap of the concert!

I didn’t get home last night until about 8:30. I relaxed for a bit and then decided to do some more Yoga Meltdown. I felt really great after that!

Now, back to today.

This morning for breakfast I had some Kashi H2H with some Almond Breeze and a sliced banana.

It was pretty filling, since I started to drink a few glasses of water in the morning when I get up. It helps!

Morning snack was peach Chobani! How I’ve missed it!

On my lunch break today I had planned on doing a 4 mile run. That didn’t happen! 😦 I went to get changed and I realized I forgot my sportsbra. The most important thing!! I was so angry at myself!!! I decided to go for a walk up to the Empire State Plaza Farmer’s Market instead! I got myself a pint of strawberries! I’ve been dying to buy local strawberries this season and I finally got my hands on some!

So juicy and delicious! I love strawberries. They are my favorite fruit.

I also got a bunch of arugula for $1.50!

Since I was still mad at myself about the run, and I was hungry, I got a vanilla bean frozen yogurt at the FroYo stand! 🙂 It was delicious! But I totally forgot to take a picture of it until after I devoured it.  Let’s pretend it looked like this, but topped with crushed Reeses Pieces. After eating this I felt better. Froyo solves everything.

I suppose I can just run later tonight.

I came back from the Farmer’s Market and made my real lunch, a Morning Star Farms chick’n patty with reduced fat American cheese on a sandwich thin. I also threw on some fresh arugula.

A pretty decent lunch if I do say so myself. Okay, I’m off! Happy Friday!

Yoga Meltdown!

Last night I stopped by Walmart to pick up a few exercise DVDs, since I feel like I could use more strength training in my life. One of the DVDs I got was Jillian Michaels’ “Yoga Meltdown“. I did it last night for the first time!

I was expecting to get my butt kicked, since this is Jillian and all, but honestly, it wasn’t that hard. I did the Level 1 Workout, which is for beginners or intermediates. It was 30 minutes of hardcore yoga poses and then movement within the pose for a more of an aerobic workout. I was dripping sweat the entire time, but I didn’t find it that difficult. It was a great workout for sure, but I didn’t get that post-workout sore muscle feeling from it. The most challenging part was the last sequence, a Warrior 3 pose with movement. It was only hard because I couldn’t keep my balance during the pose!

I want to incorporate more strength training and cross training into my workout schedule, since lately I’ve only been running. I want to work my other muscles, mostly my core and arms, because I want it to help me with endurance when I’m running. Especially because I have to run the Boilermaker in 19 days.  Holy crap!

Goals

Wow it’s pretty crappy outside. The weather is pretty reminiscent of the Missing Summer of 2009. I hope the month of May wasn’t too good to be true!

Breakfast this morning was a yummy mixture of Special K Protein and Kashi H2H with some flaxmeal and soy milk. I also had a cup of green tea. I’m trying to figure out what types of breakfast foods will keep me fuller for longer, since lately I’ve been physically hungry on my drive into work and when I get there. I can’t figure out what the deal is! I’ve even tried drinking a glass of water and that doesn’t seem to help. The foods I eat for breakfast contain a good amount of fiber and protein so I don’t know what is causing my hunger. I don’t want eat a breakfast of pancakes or an omelet just to be satisfied! That takes up way too much time in the morning!  Tomorrow I’m going to make an egg-in-a-mug sandwich and see if that helps.

Today was one of those hungry days where I just felt hungry all day! I had a pretty decent sized lunch too.

Today I also signed up to take a two hour yoga class next weekend! And the bonus: it’s outside on a beautiful farm and you get breakfast included in the price! I’m so excited! I’ve never taken an actual yoga class before.

I’ve also updated my races page with some upcoming races I plan on running this year. My goal is to run at least 10 races in 2010! I think I can do it. I’ve also been thinking about some other goals for this summer and the rest of the year:

  • Do some trail running
  • Go hiking in the Adirondacks
  • Go camping at least once!
  • Take some yoga classes
  • Go to more farmer’s markets and eat local food
  • Try a few new local restaurants
  • Be more creative in the kitchen
  • Cut back on eating sweets (like chocolate!)
  • Travel and take at least 1 mini vacation this summer

Today after work Marcie and I were supposed to go running together on some trails, but since the weather sucks, we went to my gym for a quick workout. I ran 3.1 miles in 29:32. I did some intervals while I was running just to get in more of a workout. It worked! I was tired by the end.

After the gym I headed home for some dinner. I made a quick spinach and arugula salad with carrots, beans and goat cheese. It was pretty tasty. I also had some more quinoa salad, since I have so much of it. I also had some pineapple and a few pieces of dark chocolate for dessert. (UH…I need to follow my own goals and limit my chocolate consumption.)

Now I’m pretty tired, so I think I’m going to relax and read. Have a nice night!

Happy National Running Day!

Today was gorgeous day! I love it! Too bad I was stuck inside at work all day. 😦 AND today is National Running Day! Woohoo!

According to my training plan I was supposed to run an easy three miles yesterday, but I increased it to five on the treadmill at the gym. I ran an easy five miles at an average of 10:42 minute pace. It took me about 52 minutes. It was actually pretty nice! I like taking a break from the roads once in a while, as the treadmill seems easier on my legs. I felt really great after the run too, and I hadn’t planned on running five. 🙂

Today is a rest day, as I have another run tomorrow, I will probably do another five but work some speedwork into it. I might go back to the gym again depending on the weather.

This morning I had a chocolate cherry bomb for breakfast with some Special K Protein cereal. I’m looking for ways for breakfast to fill me up, because usually when I get to work I’m hungry again! I don’t know why because I eat a lot of protein in my breakfasts. I think I just make sure I drink a glass of water every morning so it keeps me more full for longer.

Morning snack was some pineapple Chobani! Yum! I used to eat strickly low calorie yogurt (like Activia Light or Yoplait) but I’m trying to wean myself off of artificially sweetened yogurt. I know Chobani has a bit more calories (130-160 depending on the flavor), but it’s sooo delicious and I love Greek yogurt and it actually keeps me satisfied. It is also a bigger serving than Activia.  I found the other yogurts were too watery and not very satisfying.

Lunch included leftover cranberry walnut quinoa salad, and a PBJ on a whole wheat bagel thin! I used maple peanut butter and home made strawberry blueberry jam. Kind of random, I know.

Also, I had a side of grapes and a Nature Valley apple crisp bar. I think the apple is my new favorite flavor of this bar! It was tasty. I wanted to save it for later in the day but my hunger won, so I ate it.


I did some grocery shopping on the way home and got a few things for this weekend. But for dinner tonight I used some of my leftover tempeh and heated it up in a pan with some salad spice. I put it in a pita with some goat cheese spread, spinach and roasted red pepper. And some more quinoa salad of course! 🙂

The tempeh was a bit…dry. I don’t know how I feel about tempeh yet. I have 1/3 of a block left, so next time I’m going to use it in a stir fry. We’ll see how that goes. But for dessert I had one and a half of an energy bar that I made the other day. They are like crack. Its hard to stop eating them. Bah.

I wasn’t in the mood to bike tonight for some reason, so I just did about 20 minutes of yoga, which felt really good! I’m beginning to like yoga more and more! I just wish the programs were a big longer! They are only 30 minutes but without commercials it probably comes to about 20 minutes of actual yoga.

Mac and Cheese Overload

I started today off great with a delicious breakfast cookie!!! I was surprised at how good this was, with so few ingredients. Yummy. I got inspired by this post on Runner’s Kitchen. I’m so glad I tried it too. I also made a smoothie to go with it…a handful of frozen strawberries, a scoop of chocolate protein powder and about ¾ cup of light soymilk. It tasted like chocolate covered strawberries. A perfect breakfast!

So this past week was pretty boring with food…I didn’t go out any place special, except for Monday night. I got sushi at Shogun in Delmar. I used to LOVE sushi, but lately my taste for it has kind of diminished. I got the “healthy roll”, with shrimp, carrots, cucumber and avocado. No rice to be found! But it was wrapped in rice paper, I believe. A bit too chewy for my liking, so I just ate three pieces. For an appetizer I got the tofu salad with ginger dressing. I LOVED the dressing, it was so tasty. But the tofu itself was too mushy and bland. I probably wouldn’t order that again. Dessert was the best part. I skipped the cheesecake, so I ordered the peach sorbet, which was fantastic. The presentation of their sorbet is amazing. The sorbet itself was inside a frozen peach, which can be eaten. It was sooo delicious. My favorite dessert there so far…not including the green tea cheesecake!

So this past weekend was pretty laden with delicious FOOD!  Chris and I went to the Mac & Cheese Bowl 2010 on Saturday. And can I say…I haven’t had REAL mac and cheese in a LONG time, pretty much since I started eating healthy. And I definitely got my fill of it. Fifteen different restaurants competed and some had two types of mac and cheese. The cups were so small at first we were thinking we wouldn’t have enough to eat, but we were surprised. We tried all but three places because we were SO FULL from eating so much mac and cheese. And it was so crowded we had to take breaks outside and get water…the pasta  made me so thirsty! I stayed away from the mac with meat in it (I gave my cups to Chris and I ate his seafood ones) It was SO fun though..My favorite was either the lobster mac and cheese from the Prime or the lobster and shrimp mac and cheese from the Pump Station. (The Pump Station won the contest!)

So basically I didn’t get hungry again on Saturday until about 8:00 at night, when I met my cousin at the Wine Bar & Bistro on Lark. I ordered the antipasto, a cold dish, which wasn’t that filling, although rather healthy! I felt good about that, but since I wasn’t too satisfied, I ordered the Kahlua Chocolate Cheesecake, which I believe comes from Cheesecake Machismo. That was superb!! No more cheesecake for a while!! I also ordered a glass of my FAVORITE wine, the Dragonstone Riesling. I love it. So much. Sadly, no photos from the wine bar.

Sunday I decided to go to the gym to work off some mac and cheese, so I went in thinking, “Today is the day I will run five miles,” and guess what? It happened! I felt so good after that.

During the week I was craving pancakes, so I made oatmeal blueberry pancakes from scratch. They came out a bit too mushy for me…but still tasty. I think I just needed to cook them a bit longer, but I was so hungry I didn’t wait. Instead of syrup I topped them with my aunt’s homemade blueberry sauce, and it was delicious.

Tonight I am going to make goat cheese pizza, so I will post about that later on to let you know how it goes!
